The ancient science and art of ‘Yoga’ is essentially for self realisation, through self reliance. In olden days the lessons of self reliance were learnt at the feet of venerable old sages and saints. The omniscient guru used to insist upon orderly lessons and disciplines, teaching the eight-fold yogic methodology in a gradual and graduated series of theory and practice pertaining to age old yoga. Starting from Yama-Niyama, the pupil used to proceed slowly and surely to yogasanas and pranayamas and after mastering these primary essential steps, he was initiated into the inner sanctum sanctorium of Dharna, Dhyana and Samadhi. After an ordeal of strictly disciplined lessons of some twelve years or more, the sadhak (Novitiate) will proceed on his own and in due course rise, if deserving to the full fledged, genuine YOGI, an asset indeed to the society.
But, what do we find today both in India and abroad? Any Tom, Dick or Harry merely an expert in performance of asanas etc. masquerades as a yogi-raja or a yoga-therapist. How can one understand, much less treat, diseases without proper practical training and scientific guidance. Not only the knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology is required for the practice of yoga therapy, but one must be familiar with the psychology also as this therapy leads to an integrated and total cure of the five constituents – The panch koshas of human beings and not merely to a superficial relief of symptoms and signs of disease. The panch koshas are –
- Annamaya Kosha
- Pranmaya Kosha
- Manomaya Kosha
- Vigyanmaya Kosha
- Anandmaya Kosha
Yoga therapy is an ingenious and useful by-product of the ancient yoga-shastra.
Our ashram ‘Shree Neelkantha Yoga Kendra’ is located in the rural area of a remote village named ‘Surwari, of district Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Devoid of some modern comforts and conveniences it is enriched with the conduciveness of nature, green gardens all around, numerous birds and animals calling and singing to form a cosmic orchestra. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, the originator and ultimate GOD of Yoga. This temple was constructed with inspiration of Swami Satyanand Saraswati Ji Maharaj of Shri Ram Das Ashram, Kerala. The ‘Pran Pratishta’ of this temple happened on 13th March, 2008. Various rituals (anushtanas) are organised and conducted at the temple on request of the devotees. Facilities for guiding and teaching Yoga as per classical techniques is available at the ashram.
We are bringing up some people who will help others in the field of mantra therapy, massage therapy, mudra therapy, music therapy and meditation (5M therapy). But one must understand that all of these shall not be used for each and every person. The selection will depend upon one’s tastes and tendencies and other inclinations. Soft skill in the realm of yoga are in fact higher stages but appear to be simpler, quick and easy but it requires great devotion, dedication, patience and ultimately intense desire to achieve it. Some people are born graduates in this field and we are trying to provide laboratories of human societies for practical classes to them. Thus our platform is also open to such people who do posses some natural talent of this kind.
